EARLY MENTIONS OF WEXFORD RESTRICKS
Alice Mitchell, joint researcher with Rita Restorick,
have been looking at a Restrick grouping in the Republic of Ireland.
Restorick and Restarick pronounced Restrick in West Country but sometimes Yorkshire Raistrick becomes Restrick. The earliest mention is a 1688 baptism, see below and then a gap until baptisms in 1731, 1732 and 1736 in Ferns, Wexford, where the mother’s maiden name was Restrick so they must have been born around 1706. There was also a Rustrick family in Waterford who were Catholic going back to baptism of Mary in 1814 of John and Margaret (McDonnell) Rustrick, then a marriage there of a John Rustrick to Margaret Stafford in 1826.
Restrick is not an Irish name and the Restricks of Wexford were Church of Ireland until some married into the Catholic faith around 1820-30. Names Edward, William, Thomas, Joseph, Henry and James appear mostly. Edward Restrick bap 1711 Colyton, Devon disappears from records also William Restorick born 1736 Colyton disappears from records.
Restricks centred around Rathaspick, Ballyregan,Kildavin, Piercetown in county Wexford, Republic of Ireland.
There is a memorial in Mayglass, Old Wexford: “Wm Restrick, faithful servant to Mr Harvey’s family for 64 years. Died 6 Sept 1821 in his 87th year. This stone erected by Mr John Harvey in his memory.” This would indicate William was born around 1734. The Harvey family lived in Bargy Castle and Bagenal Harvey became involved in the 1798 uprising and was executed.
Edward and James Restrick served in the Wexford Militia during the 1798 uprising and Edward Restrick, possibly their father, was murdered in the Scullabogue barn massacre of Protestant and Catholic loyalists on 5 June 1798. His widow Jane received a pension from the British Government.
Thomas Restrick (b1860) and his brother Caleb (1868), sons of Thomas, a farmer living in Ferns, became Sergeants in the Royal Irish Constabulary in Kerry. John Henry Restrick, son of Thomas (b1860) settled in Belfast. Meanwhile their brother Joseph (1866) emigrated to Australia and died in Heidelberg, Victoria in 1944. Their younger brother Edward went into service and became a butler. The Catholic Restricks became farmers and gardeners. John Restrick from this branch settled in Birkenhead.
